О кобальте и кобольдах

Еще один дух-хранитель подземных богатств, на этот раз германский - кобольд. Название переводится как "владыка помещения". Может быть домовым (духом домашнего очага). Кобольды известны также как морские корабельные духи и, особенно, как горные духи. Духи-хранители подземных ископаемых, которые не допускают людей к подземным богатствам. Их ближайшие родственники - германские эльфы и альвы, а также гномы и дверги. Англосаксонские аналоги - cofgodas (домашние божки). На лицо ужасные и внутри не слишком добрые, обычно серого или красного цвета, как огонь в очаге.

Населяют шахты, по поверьям рудокопов очень злы, приносят несчастья, портят руду. Кстати, название химического элемента кобальта происходят от "кобольд". Кобальтовые руды имеют ядовитые примеси серы и мышьяка, вызывающие отравления шахтеров, также они портили чистоту залегающих рядом руд.

Кобольдов упоминает Гете в "Фаусте" в качестве синонима гномов - элементалей стихии Земли. Однако в отличие от добрых гномов, кобольды злы и коварны. Их изображают как безобразных карликов, живущих под землей. Кобольд может иметь копыта (обычно козлиные), рожки и клыки. Боится солнца.

Кобольд Хинцельман упоминается в книге Нила Геймана "Американские боги" в виде кровожадного существа, "крышующего" селение, которому ежегодно в начале зимы приосили в жертву ребенка. Кобольд у Геймана - божество, которое возникало в результате убийства ребенка, не видевшего света.

О кобальте подробнее. Когда обжигали минералы, содержащие мышьяк, выделялись летучие оесиды мышьяка, ядовитые для человека. Поэтому такая руда и получила имя горного духа. Кобольды считались причиной отравлений плавильшиков при переплавке серебра у древних норвежцев. По-видимому имя этих злых духов восходит к греческому "кобалос" - дым. Так же греки называли лживых людей. Металл кобальт впервые выделил шведский минералог Георг Бранд в 1735 г., он же определил, что соединения этого элемента окрашивает стекло в синий цвет - это свойство использовали в древней Ассирии и Вавилоне.

Близкие к кобальдам духи - английские boggart, hobgoblin, pixi, шотландские nisse и tomte, норвежские dwarf и knoker. Ирландский ученый Томас Кейтли (Thomas Keightley) утверждал, что немецкие кобальды и скандинавские ниссе (nis) - предшественники ирландских fairy и шотландских brownie. Однако американский фольклорист Ричард Мерсер Дорсон (Richard Merser Dorson) критиковал Кейтли за преобладание гото-германских идей над кельтскими.

Stranger Things: Meet Me in Montauk

So many-- maybe too many-- loose strands are tying together it seems.

2016 seems to be a year in which the curtain has raised quite a bit more than in the past and Stranger Things feels like a definitive part of that unveiling. If it weren't intentionally designed to coincide with the ongoing apocalyptic process that's upon us, whether we like it or not, it should have been.

Stranger Things' mixture of horror and historical sci-fi brings a real-world connection into relief, one that had seemed like it could only be a google-eyed paranoid rumor, and that's the bleedover from the pseudoscientific to the supernatural in CIA black projects, particularly that juncture at which MK Ultra and ARTICHOKE

Very Bad Company – Occultism And Power

As Margaret Thatcher once said, “being powerful is like being a lady. It you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.”

When Maggie frikking Thatcher takes you to school, you have to seriously question whether you are doing occultism wrong.

The relationship between magic and temporal power has been so close as to be nearly indistinguishable for thousands of years.

Is that still the case, or are the presumptive inheritors of this all-together unseemly relationship now just having annual meetings in carpeted function rooms of low-cost hotels out by the airport?

Is Magic still the bag-man-of-last-resort for Power?

I would say it is. But you aren’t going to like it. You aren’t going to like it for two reasons.

It has nothing to do with you or me. We are playing dress-up in the garden while the big people talk inside.
It has a lot to do with people that have a lot to do with you. They probably gave you some of your beliefs. They certainly did me.

That last point doesn’t invalidate those beliefs, per se, but it does make them rather more murky. John Dee was the spy that invented the Empire. But Enochian seems to work, doesn’t it? It is a dangerous thing to dissociate these two identities. Because I think they coincide.

I think we can go so far as to say that the most important twentieth century western magical current is one that none of us are in. In terms of scale, in terms of results, in terms of terrestrial impact. The wizard’s place has always been beside the throne. Merlin, Morgana, Gandalf, Obi Wan.

So let’s take a peek at who is standing in our spot.

Beginning in the middle

The last 130 years appear to mark a shift in how occult organisations have been used. Or, at least, where in the architecture of power they have been positioned. In the preceding centuries, magic was either the plaything of an elite who could reasonably escape punishment or something poor people did on the fringes of woodland because they couldn’t afford the expert medical opinion of an educated man who would prescribe bloodletting, mercury, and opium.

Intellectually curious empires relaxed the enforcement of many of these laws. Previously, magical innovation may have emanated from the elite. Now, the parts that worked were snatched up. (“Her Imperial Majesty does not attend séances… But if the Countess might have a recommendation?”)

To some extent, this marked a change from secret societies’ previous function as a social technology to enable political discourse free from the prying eyes of the church and state to incubators of new social technologies. Channeling, hypnotism, yoga, etc.

Whilst there was a shift in the primary observable function of secret societies, we may nevertheless make some qualified assumptions as to the non-magical political beliefs and discussions held by these people… just as we may by observing magical groups today.

Saint Sirius And The Dog Days

So we move into the dog days, when the influence of the heliacal rising of Sirius upon the world of men turns from enigmatic to almost malefic.

Sirius, who is Isis, and part of the immortality formula that underpins much of the western mystery tradition.

And the dog days of Sirius are lousy with dark age dog saints the way dark age dogs were lousy with fleas, particularly along that strange arc of southern Europe that encompasses Al-Andalus, Catalonia and Occitania (Cathar territory).
