A Preferable Pedagogic Mission of Using Virtual Reality (VR) in Schools' Curricula:
An Imen-Delphi (ID) Exercise with a Group of Scholars and Developers

This research concerning VR in education is an attempt to define the future mission of virtual reality (VR) in education. In this on-going research, we are using a version of the Delphi method called "Imen-Delphi" technique.
This technique offers an opportunity for a group of experts who are involved with VR in education to discuss the rationale for using VR in schools, to clarify their opinions and expectations, to encourage them to express new ideas regarding a preferred future of VR in education, and to reach an agreement on curricula concerning these issues. This procedure will include three rounds in order for the experts to come to an agreement.

The basic idea behind this technique is that the images of the future that people have in their minds can have a dramatic impact on their actions.
The researcher's role is to facilitate anonymous interactions within the group. We have been conducting this research via e-mail with a group of experts from all over the world: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, and Venezuela. This process has helped this group of experts to examine and take into consideration different possibilities for the future of VR in education.
The expected result of this research is that the group of world-wide experts will succeed in working out a mutually agreed upon concept of using VR in schools. Hopefully, this will help future VR developers to meet the needs and aspirations of this unique group of experts.
You may see the preliminary results of this research and add your opinion. After you have looked at the list of future mission statements, you may mark whether or not you are satisfied with the way education nowadays uses the potential of VR expressed in each of these statements. In addition, you can take some time to give any suggestions as to how we can promote the implementation of these statements in future VR and education. We will be very grateful if you will send your responses to us via e-mail to sharbata@mail.inter.net.il. Thank you.
We have plans for a posting the preliminary results at http://faculty.biu.ac.il/~passig/research.html.

Abstract

Since its introduction in the early 1950s, the Delphi technique has experienced ever-increasing utilization, variants, praise, and criticism. The purpose of this article is to propose an evolutionary variant called Imen-Delphi for futures research. This article suggests that an Imen-Delphi procedure may be appropriate as a research technique to improve the efficiency of a group of panelists to invent change. This article describes the Imen-Delphi's design and procedure, alongside details of a real world example of its use in engaging a group of participants to redefine a relevant future-mission for their educational institute.
