This is the last branch of the ancestors of actor Marlon Brando to spell the surname as "Brandow". The following generations spell the family name as "Brando". Catherine was the 3rd child of John VanOrden and Catherine Peerson VanOrden. Catherine married Paulus Brandow on Feb 27th 1816. They had several children including Peter W, Rachel, Catherine A, James H, and Jane. Note: Catherine VanOrden Brandow was the 3x great granddaughter of the French Huguenot Louis Dubois. Marlon Brando mentioned this ancestor on the Johnny Carson Show in the 1970's. On live TV, Marlon described how the ancestors of Louis Dubois were French Royals and that these ancestors included kings of France and included people who fought in the Crusades in the Middle East. If anyone can find the exact episode of the Johhny Carson show in which Marlon tells this story, would you please add a note in the "flowers section" here on this memorial. The PENNEBAKER surname is an anglicized form with origin in both the ancient Dutch PANNEBAKKER and Germanic PFANNEBECKER surnames. The name is of occupational origin and is traceable to a term literally translated as "producer of tiles." On the 15th of September 1463, an edict was issued in the Netherlands forbidding further use of thatch or straw as roofing material and requiring that thereafter the houses should be roofed with tiles. The benefit to tile-makers is obvious. The use of roofing tile in the Netherlands is very prominent to this day. The family shield - while not a "Lordly Coat-of-Arms" - is described as "A tile erect which rests in the ground and is surrounded by leaves" and "looking like an erect spade with short handle", reflects their tile maker occupation. Further described as "an argent, 3 scrolls, 2 and 1 gules; crest: a winged scroll." At a very early date the shield was cut in glass in a window of the church in Gorcum/Gorkum (gôr´kum), Netherlands. Although the church was reportedly destroyed during an 1568 uprising against Spanish rule, current information has it that the family shield was in a Gorinchem (gôr´inkhum) church window until the church was demolished in 1849. A photograph of the shield was taken and is now in the possession of the council-archives there. The Germanic PFANNEBECKER family motto is: "Mein Siegel ist ein Ziegel - My Seal is a Tile." The modern color rendition PFANNEBECKER or PENNEBAKER family shield (upper right) is used by the Flomborn, Germany MICHEL-PFANNEBECKER Winery (founded 1677). The traditional shield (lower right) is essentially the same as the modern version. Today, in The Netherlands, these same shields are displayed in PANNEBAKKER homes.
A mid-1300's A.D. family legend implies that the PANNEBAKKERS fled to Gorkum, present day Gorinchem, Netherlands from Gaul to escape war-torn and plague-ridden central Europe. The earliest trace of named family individuals tells the partly verified tale of Herr Jan de PANNEBAKKER and his wife Nancy who were accused of heresy and killed by the Spaniards at Utrecht, Netherlands in 1568. Herr Jan, a successful tile manufacturer from Gorkum, Netherlands was burned at the stake and his wife was stripped and drowned in a tub of water. Cornelius, Herr Jan's son, witnessing this cruelty inflicted upon his parents, fled from Gorkum and traveled up the Rhine River to the Rhineland Palatinate (see Palatine Links). He joined other members of his family who had earlier escaped the torment of persecution and war in the Netherlands at the time. Whether the reason was due to war or religious persecution the PANNEBAKKER family or families emigrated the Netherlands probably during the late sixteenth to mid-seventeenth centuries up the Rhine to the vicinity of Flomborn, Germany. It is from this rural and wine producing Rhineland Palatinate locale that the PANNEBAKKER descendants known by their Germanic PFANNEBECKER (possibly PFANNENBECKER) surname will later immigrate between 1695-1749 to Pennsylvania to establish the PENNEBAKER and kindred families.
NOORD-BRABANT AND ZUID-HOLLAND PROVINCES, NETHERLANDS
Johannes PANNEBAKKER/PFANNEBECKER was born in either the Province of Zuid-Holland (left) or Noord-Brabrant (right) about 1645 and later emigrated from Gorkum, Zuid-Holland Province to Flomborn, Germany. It is under the Germanic PFANNEBECKER name that is found the first official records of the family in Flomborn. The French destroyed many records in the Palatine during The War of the Palantine (aka, The War of the Grand Alliance or The War of The League of Augsburg), 1689-1697, leaving many unresolved questions.
PFANNEBECKER LINEAGE IN FLOMBORN

Reunion Doesn't Miss Star Marlon Brando's Ancestors Were A German Couple Who Settled In Lansdale.
......
KULPSVILLE — Actor Marlon Brando and filmmaker D.A. Pennebacker missed their family reunion this weekend.
They could have gotten chummy with 480 distant relatives at Pennypacker Mills in Schwenksville and feasted on hoagies and coleslaw at the Holiday Inn on Sumneytown Pike.
Next year, maybe?
Not likely, said Sue Pennypacker Constantini, a local organizer of the national Pannebecker-Umstat reunion.
``I don't think we can do this every year,'' said Constantini, 48, of Royersford. ``Looks like [Brando and Pennebacker] missed out.''
Yesterday, the last day of the reunion, the dining room of the Holiday Inn was crammed with more than 200 people who could trace their ancestral roots to Eve Umstat and Hendrick Pannebecker, a German couple who arrived on American soil in 1699 and settled in Lansdale.
Hendrick Pannebecker was a road surveyor, Constantini said. ``We think he may have been recruited by William Penn, but we're not really sure.''
Little is known about Umstat's history, but several people at the luncheon who said they were descendants of her family wore ``I'm an UM'' buttons.
There are 36 derivations of the name Pannebecker, said Pat Journeay of Lyons, Colo. There are also several forms of Umstat, such as Umstead, Umstadt and Umstats, she said.
Former Pennsylvania Gov. Samuel Whitaker Pennypacker was a relative, Journeay said. Pennypacker Mills is his former estate.
To Journeay, the reunion was the culmination of more than two years of work to discover her family roots.
``I didn't know anything about my family, and I had always been curious,'' she said. ``So I figured, why not?''
Journeay, 51, started the search at her local Mormon library because, she said, ``everybody knows the Mormons have the most extensive records on family history around.'' There, she struck pay dirt.
Journeay found that her great-grandfather, James Pennybaker, left Kentucky in 1883 in a covered wagon headed West when he was only 6 months old.
And, ``thanks to the Internet, I was able to do other searches and find family from all over the country, even as far away as Alaska,'' she said.
She also discovered that she was distantly related to Marlon Brando and to D.A. Pennebaker, who is known for such films as The War Room, a documentary about President Clinton's 1992 campaign. Brando's mother was Dorothy Pennebaker, she said.
The accuracy of some genealogical records is debatable, Constantini said.
``Sure, you always wonder if something that was recorded more than 250 years ago is correct or not, but those records are the closest thing we have,'' she said.
Jason Desens, 24, who drove from Chicago with his brother Mike to attend the event, said he was amazed at how many distant relatives he had.
``I had no clue these people even existed,'' he said. ``We've doubled our Christmas list already.''
Mike Desens, 29, praised the Internet for bringing everyone together.
``Ten years ago, you were living by phone, word of mouth and `snail mail,' '' he said. ``Something of this scale would have been really hard to accomplish.
``You always hear how bad the Internet can be, but this is a testament to one of the good things that can come out of it.''
