Аш, фамилия (א״ש‎) — фамилия, аббревиатура от «Altschul» или «Eisenstadt» (אײז שטאט‎). Замена фамилии «Eisenstadt» аббревиатурой «Аш» была применена к имени Меира Α., айзенштадского раввина, умершего в 1744 году. Его потомок, Авраам Цеви Гирш, раввин в Оттинии (ум. 21 августа 1868), подписывался «Eisenstadt». Та же аббревиатура (א״ש‎) применялась и к другому Меиру Α., официальная фамилия которого была «Eisenstädter» (автор «Imre Esch», Унгвар, 1864, где он был раввином и ум. в 1861 г.). Передача слова א״ש‎ через «огонь» объясняет заглавия сочинений первого Меира Аша, напр. имя его книги «Panim Meiroth». [J. E., II, 176].

2. Как в иврите, так и в идише есть особый звук, обозначаемый буквой ה. Это звонкий щелевой заднеязычный звук, похожий на украинское, южнорусское и белорусское Г. Но кроме этого, и в иврите и в идише есть как звук, совпадающий с русским звуком Х (ḥ) (то есть глухой щелевой), так и звук, совпадающий с московским произношением буквы Г (то есть звонкий взрывной заднеязычный). Поэтому для передачи ивритского/идишского звонкого щелевого звука в русской транслитерации аббревиатур и их расшифровок неудобно использовать ни букву Г, ни букву Х. В то же время желательно правильно передавать исходное звучание соответствующих слов, так как это важно для понимания того, почему, скажем, по-русски соответствующие фамилии пишутся так, а не иначе. В этой ситуации, видимо, наименьшим злом является использование для передачи этого звука латинской буквы h.

This surname, of Anglo-Saxon origin, is either a topographical name for someone who lived near a prominent ash tree, deriving from the Olde English pre 7th Century "oesc" meaning "ash", or it may be a locational name from some minor place so named. Topographical surnames were among the earliest created, since both natural and man-made features in the landscape provided easily recognisable distinguishing names in the small communities of the Middle Ages, and locational surnames were developed when former inhabitants of a place moved to another area, usually in search of work, and were best identified by the name of their birthplace.
