She was in an enviable position to be sure, but I do feel bad that for so many years she had an unfaithful husband. I think it's a testament to how much she loved him and also how much class she had that she stuck with him and never bad mouthed him in the press during their separation. I'm glad they were able to get back together and that during the last years of their marriage, they were happier than they had ever been.

I am ridiculously in love with this picture. Seriously, I would not be opposed to a blown up, matted, and framed, version of it... hanging on my living room wall. It's such a gorgeously fabulous candid shot.

She must've been a VERY strong lady. All of those infidelities. I mean, those are huge betrayals. For her to be able to forgive that, and still want to be with him, is pretty amazing. Gary was quite the lucky man.

Absolutely. She was also a very devout Roman Catholic, so to her marriage was a sacrament that was to honored at all costs. No possibility of divorce, so lots of love, faith, patience and perseverence. Admirable.

I read something somewhere from the time when Gary and Rocky were dating and it talked about how he didn't have a serious girlfriend but was dating Veronica Balfe and actress Sandra Shaw. I laughed out loud b/c they didn't realize it was the same person. He really didn't want the press in on his relationship with her when they were dating and he didn't talk about her with them. I have one article posted here in the 30s section titled "I'm not in love" and it came out around the same time they announced their engagement. He really had everybody fooled which is I think why they were so surprised when they tied the knot.

Not a brooch, don't think he was into that ! Could of been a flower head of some kind, bit like a buttonhole flower.

It does look sort of like a spray of three small flowers as a lapel flower effect.

Great photos, maggiejones! She was beautiful and very elegant, and I think that she stayed with him bc she was very in love with him, that must have been the reason why she always forgot his infidelities, not her religion.

So many pics of Rocky seem to catch her at the worst time, either with her mouth open or her eyes closed or something like that. I guess you can't help it though when people are just snapping pics at parties and stuff like that.

It looks like this pic is from the early 40s. I think this is the prettiest pic I've seen of Rocky. She really was very beautiful.

Love the picture. Rocky was a handsome women. I really like this studio picture of Rocky and the picture of Rocky & Maria that Gary carried with him. It's posted on the site but could not find a a copy to add here.

I have two pictures that were taken the same day and this one just below I found today and it had a date with it. It was taken December 14, 1933 the day before their wedding. They were at a sports awards dinner in New York.

I can't say I like all of the stuff Rocky wore (even today I don't like the high society style), sometimes Gary seems so out of place except maybe in the picture "Gary & Rocky 1938". I've never been much of a red lipstick person either.

Although the newly married Coopers did not become reclusive, Gary did do a complete turn-about from his party-boy image that had so delighted gossip columnists.

Rocky gracefully undertook the role of "Star's Wife" yet retained her dignity and her identity, never content to exist in the shadow of her husband's fame. They complemented each other well - she was driving and energetic where he was quiet and casual.

"If I'd married a nice young man in a business suit, none of this would have happened. But he never bores me, and to be bored with the life you lead is the deadliest boredom."
